The Israeli security cabinet and the government last night approved a ceasefire plan with Hamas that envisages the release of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

"The government has approved the plan for the release of the hostages. The plan for the release of the hostages will come into effect on Sunday, January 19, 2025," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement.
Hamas has already announced that it has accepted the terms of the agreement and is committed to respecting them.

In the first phase of the deal, which is set to last 42 days, Hamas agreed to release 33 hostages, including children, women – including female soldiers – and people over the age of 50. In return, Israel will release 50 Palestinian prisoners for every Israeli woman freed by Hamas and 30 for the other female hostages.
