Perinski: Ljubljana is an example that we should follow - a functional city and satisfied citizens

What does the City's vision for sustainable development 2007-2025 contain, how Ljubljana manages to be declared the greenest European metropolis several times, what was the key factor to get that primacy, how is public transport organized and the public hygiene maintenance system, how all these areas are treated in the Law on Local Self-Government and how is the division of powers between the City and the Municipalities carried out?

These were just some of the topics of today's meeting between the Minister of Local Self-Government, Zlatko Perinski, and the Mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Jankovic, as part of the minister's three-day study visit to Slovenia, as part of his agenda for the exchange of experiences and positive practices from the countries from the region in the direction of preparing the planned amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government.

Perinski sourced information about Janković's undoubtedly excellent management of the capital of Slovenia, which he has been at the head of for almost 20 years, and about the way he communicates with the citizens and the central government.

They also discussed how they overcome disagreements, the advantages and disadvantages of a "closed city", as well as the way of financing projects and support from EU funds.

"It was an honor to meet Mayor Jankovic, whose fifth mayoral term is a sufficient indicator of his successful management of the City. His vision, dedication, transparency and teamwork in synergy with the legal framework based on the needs of citizens guarantee success, satisfied citizens and functional local self-government. I believe that Ljubljana is an excellent example of a city from the region whose experiences we should take into account and use for our goals and plans for the amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government, and in the service of our citizens and municipalities", said Minister Perinski after the meeting, at which was informed in more detail about the legal regulation regarding the possibility of recalling a mayor, about the successful reduction of air pollution despite the specific position of Ljubljana, as well as about the benefits and the system of functioning of the communal police.

Minister Perinski also held a working meeting with Kristof Mlakar, the director of the public holding "Ljubljana", within which several public enterprises in charge of maintaining public hygiene, the water supply network and public transport operate, whose priorities when carrying out activities follow development and environmental guidelines defined at national and local level.
