Pentagon: US destroys its latest chemical weapons
The United States destroyed the last one M55 rocket containing the nerve agent VX as part of a government program to eliminate chemical weapons, the Pentagon said.
"We are delighted to have reached a critical juncture in total chemical disarmament," said Kingston Rife, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Threat Reduction and Arms Control.
The Pentagon says the missile contained the last shipment of VX chemical weapons in the United States and was destroyed under the International Chemical Weapons Convention.
According to the Pentagon, the United States destroyed a total of about 18 M000 missiles between July 55 and May 2021.
The Convention requires all member states to eliminate all chemical weapons. Russia, which is also a party to the convention, has announced the complete liquidation of its stockpile of chemical weapons in 2017.
