A seventeen-year-old child in a very serious state of health, but also with chicken pox, is being cared for at the Children's Clinic. The Director of the Clinic, Professor Dr. Stojka Naceva Fuštić reassures that there is no danger of the spread of chicken pox at the Clinic, because the child was cared for in complete isolation and according to protocol.

- We are talking about a patient with severe cerebral palsy and severe deformities, he is tied to a bed. The patient is on a machine. He came with a rash, his colleagues immediately became suspicious, they ambuled him in the corridor and he is in isolation. There is no danger of spreading chicken pox. For now, we don't have any other patients with chicken pox, unless they are in incubation, doctor Naceva Fushtic told us.

In January of this year, the most frequently registered acute infectious disease was sheep pox with a total of 936 registered persons. They account for 83,4 percent of the total number of patients in the month, and in the group of the ten most common infectious diseases for this month, they account for 83,8 percent, according to the report of the Institute of Public Health.

Compared to the previous month of December 2022, a 41,9 percent decrease in the number of reported cases of chicken pox was registered, and compared to the month of January 2021, an increase of 12 times was registered.

The epidemiologist from IJZ doctor Gordana Kuzmanovska told "Sloboden Pechat" that in the current time period chickenpox is common, but that only in immunocompromised patients it can lead to more severe consequences and an unwanted form.

- Bronchopneumonia can rarely occur in healthy children. There is no routine vaccination against varicella in our country, just as there is no routine vaccination against varicella in other developed countries. It is considered a milder disease. The recommendation of the World Health Organization is that vaccination should be aimed at risk groups and not for all children and not routinely. Recently, there is an initiative to vaccinate a certain category of children in the country against chicken pox according to epidemiological and clinical indications, but this vaccine is not in the mandatory immunization calendar, says Dr. Kuzmanovska, head of the department for control and monitoring of infectious diseases at the Institute of Public Health.

Chickenpox is an infectious disease that spreads quickly. Children usually get over it easily with the appearance of a rash and a slightly elevated body temperature that lasts for several days. The patient is contagious two days before the appearance of chicken pox and while the rash lasts. Chicken pox can be dangerous for newborns, pregnant women and people with weak immunity.

Family physicians are the ones who most often register chickenpox and then report the number of new cases to the Public Health Centers. If necessary, children are sent for additional specialist examinations. The doctors' recommendation is for the child to be absent from the team, that is, not to go to kindergarten for at least two weeks until the rash subsides. To prevent superinfection, one should not scratch the rash, regularly ventilate the premises, eat healthy food and maintain regular hygiene. It is recommended that children have their nails trimmed to reduce the risk of itching.
