The way is open for Kamala Harris to become the presidential candidate of the Democrats
US Vice President Kamala Harris won enough delegate votes to be nominated by the Democratic Party to participate in the presidential election in November, said the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Jamie Harrison.
The online voting process ends on Monday, but Kamala Harris has already crossed the threshold today and won a majority of delegates' votes.
- I am honored to be a potential Democratic candidate, Harris said in a conversation with supporters, adding that he will formally accept the nomination next week.
The official nomination is expected to be finalized by August 7, although the party's convention in Chicago is scheduled to begin in just over two weeks.
The vice president of the United States said that she is excited about the future, but that she is aware that "she has a lot of work ahead of her."
"The power is in the people. We will win these elections," she emphasized.
Meanwhile, Harris has included three associates of former US President Barack Obama in his campaign staff for the upcoming presidential election. Included in Harris' campaign staff are David Plouffe, Stephanie Katter and Mitch Stewart.
Plouffe is a political strategist who managed Obama's successful 2008 presidential campaign and served as a senior adviser to his 2012 re-election campaign.
Katter, who was White House communications chief, was also Obama's deputy campaign manager. Her firm has a contract to organize the Democratic National Convention between August 19 and 22 in Chicago.
Stewart, like Plouffe, worked for Obama during both of his election campaigns. Now he comes as a senior campaign adviser in the most contested states in the Democratic-Republican race.
More power in Harris' campaign staff now goes to David Binder, who, as he did under Obama, will lead the polling team, now also tracking media trends.
Campaign veteran Jane O'Malley Dillon, who led three successful campaigns – both of Obacha's and Biden's, is at the head of the campaign staff of the current US vice president.
