The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Skopje has opened an investigation against the driver who killed a 24-year-old girl at a pedestrian crossing at the City Mall in the Skopje neighborhood of Karposh yesterday. The Prosecution confirmed that they were seeking custody for the driver who caused the accident and found that he was driving faster than allowed, and a flashing yellow light was on at the traffic lights at the intersection.

"The Prosecution has issued an Order for conducting an investigation procedure against a person for whom there is a reasonable suspicion that he has committed the crimes - Serious acts against the safety of people and property in traffic from Article 300 paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 297 paragraph 1, as well as Failure to provide assistance to a person injured in a traffic accident in accordance with Article 301 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code ", reads the statement from the Public Prosecutor.

The Prosecution also revealed how the accident happened, in which the boyfriend of the dead girl was also injured.

"On January 20, the suspect, as a participant in the traffic on public roads, was driving a passenger motor vehicle Citroen C4 on the boulevard" Partizanski Odredi ". When he came to the intersection with the streets "Moskovska" and "Ljubljanska", where the traffic lights - traffic lights were excluded from the program and worked with a flashing yellow light, he acted contrary to Article 19 of the Law on Road Traffic Safety, ie although he was obliged did not pay attention to pedestrians on the road. Contrary to Article 35, approaching a marked pedestrian crossing, the suspect was driving the car at a speed of more than 50 kilometers per hour, which prevented him from stopping the vehicle in time in case of need. With the front part of the vehicle, he hit two pedestrians who were passing by the marked pedestrian crossing. The injured girl received severe bodily injuries and died on the spot, while the other pedestrian was injured and taken to hospital, "said the Prosecutor's Office.

The suspected driver left the injured people helpless and remained in his vehicle until the arrival of the inspection team, the statement added.

"Because there are circumstances that indicate a danger of escape, the possibility of the suspect influencing witnesses or experts and thus obstructing the criminal proceedings, as well as a justified fear that he might repeat the crime, the competent public prosecutor to the pre-trial judge from "The Basic Criminal Court in Skopje submitted a proposal for determining a measure of detention," added the Public Prosecutor's Office.
