Eight killed in deadly fire in Moscow

At least eight people died in a large fire in an office building near Moscow, the state news agency "Tass" reports.

Emergency officials said only one person had been rescued from the fire in the burning building in Fryazino, about 25 kilometers northeast of the capital, the BBC reports.

Two people died after jumping from a window, while six died when the interior of the office building collapsed in the fire, a local emergency services official said.

Footage online shows thick smoke billowing from the upper floors of the eight-story complex.

The building once housed the Platan Research Institute and the defense industry, Russian media reports.

Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said that a 34-year-old man was taken to hospital in serious condition, while two firefighters were also treated for injuries sustained in the fire. Local emergency services said the man was the only person rescued from the fire.

Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that over 100 firefighters and two helicopters are working to extinguish the fire.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire, but an eyewitness told Tas that it broke out on the sixth floor before spreading.
