The scarce supply dictates the price: There are cherries, barely enough for a soul

The citizens say that cherries are expensive for them, even though tradition dictates that a ceramic bowl with this fruit be given on Halloween.

The offer of cherries on green markets is scarce, and their price ranges from 100 to 150 denars per kilogram. In the markets, you can find packages of half a kilogram at a price of 125 denars, but the citizens say that they are expensive, even though the tradition dictates that a ceramic bowl with this fruit be given for Dukhovden. Even on the official agricultural portal, there is no supply of cherries either wholesale or retail, which shows that their more serious sale has not yet started.

- There are no cherries, the rain has destroyed them, and there is no sun to make them sweeter. Unlike last year, there is no large supply, because the weather in the past days did not suit the cherries. Farmers complain that there is not enough sun for them to ripen, so they fall green and rot - say the shopkeepers.

According to statistical data, 2021 tons of cherries were produced in 4.716, and last year the total production of this fruit was 5.768 tons. Last year, on average, a Macedonian family bought 1,4 kilograms of cherries. It is almost minor compared to, say, Croatia, where on average between 2 and 2,5 kilograms of cherries are consumed per head, while the average in developed European countries and Turkey, as one of the largest producers, is around 8 or even more kilograms.

The situation with the supply and prices of this fruit is similar in the region. As H1 Croatia reported, most people resent the price of cherries, claiming it is unreasonably high.

According to the data from the market information system of the Ministry of Agriculture, last week cherries on the Croatian markets cost an average of 10,88 euros per kilogram. In Zagreb, they were sold from 8 to 15 euros, and the average was 11,5 euros. On the market in Rijeka, they were sold for 15 euros, and in Osijek for 12 euros. The cheapest cherries could be found in Zadar: there they cost 5 euros per kilogram, reports Danica.hr.
