UN: The health system in Gaza is "on its knees", thousands of people are waiting to be evacuated

With only twelve of Gaza's 36 hospitals partially functional, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that even with additional field hospitals up and running, there is "not enough" health infrastructure for the country to cope with the tens of thousands injured in the war. .

Gaza's humanitarian affairs officer, Yasmina Guerda, said the "health system is on its knees" in Gaza.

"Many have lost limbs, many have traumatic injuries and thousands have lost their hearing due to the constant blasts," she added.

Guerda said that in addition "there have been constant attacks on health facilities, especially hospitals, which is a direct violation of international humanitarian law."

A health worker claimed her team was attacked as they left the hospital along a marked "safe route", adding that she hoped to be able to leave Gaza to continue treatment.

Israel launched its offensive after a Hamas attack on October 7 in which the militants swept into southern Israel, killing around 1.200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping around 250.

At least 35.000 Palestinians have died in the war, a statistic kept by Gaza's health ministry, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians.
