The United Nations General Assembly tonight overwhelmingly condemned Russia's "attempted illegal annexation" of four partially occupied regions in Ukraine and called on all countries not to recognize the move, strengthening Moscow's diplomatic international isolation, DPA reported.

The UNSC decision is not binding, but the resolution declared the annexation invalid and demanded that Russia reverse its moves to annex Ukraine's eastern regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia.

Three-quarters of the General Assembly's 193 members, or 143 countries, voted in favor of the resolution, which also reaffirms the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the decision as historic.

"The world has told itself - the attempt to annex Russia is worthless and will never be recognized by free nations," he wrote on Twitter.

US President Joe Biden, on the other hand, said that the result of the vote is a message to Moscow that it cannot erase a sovereign state from the world map.

"The stakes of this conflict are clear to all – and the world has sent a clear message in response: Russia cannot wipe a sovereign state off the map. Russia cannot change borders by force. Russia cannot seize the territory of another country as its own," said Biden's announcement, transmitted by the German agency.

"It's unbelievable," Ukraine's ambassador to the UN, Serhiy Kislytsya, told reporters after the vote, standing next to US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who said the result showed Russia could not intimidate the world.

Only four countries joined Russia in voting against the resolution – Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea and Belarus. Thirty-five countries abstained from voting, including Russia's strategic partner China, while the rest did not vote, DPA reports.

-Today Russia is attacking Ukraine. But tomorrow it could be another nation whose territory is violated. It could be you. You could be next. What would you expect from this council? Thomas-Greenfield said before the vote in the General Assembly.

Moscow last month declared the annexation of four partially occupied regions in Ukraine - Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia - after organizing referendums in them. Ukraine and its allies condemned the vote as illegal and forced.

The General Assembly vote follows Russia's veto last month of a similar resolution in the 15-member Security Council.

The Russian ambassador to the UN, Vasiliy Nebeznya, said before the vote in the General Assembly that the resolution was "politicized and openly provocative", adding that it "could destroy all efforts in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis".
