The Minister of Internal Affairs stated that he is against the adoption of the Amnesty Law. If the law comes into force, all those who have a prison sentence of up to six months will be released. Persons convicted of minor crimes will receive a 30 percent reduction in their sentence.

According to Minister Spasovski, the law will not significantly contribute to freeing up places in prisons, nor will it reduce the pressure on penal institutions. Instead of this, as Spasovski says, the state should think strategically in increasing the capacities of prison institutions.

"My position is that neither the time nor the moment is appropriate for the adoption of the amnesty law... Those persons who have committed crimes, primarily robberies, serious thefts, etc., represent an even greater burden on the security situation, or if we look at them past amnesty laws, you will see that most of those people return in two to three months, because they commit crimes again", says Oliver Spasovski.
