Ohrid, Struga and Pogradec will be connected by a regular shipping line across Lake Ohrid within the cross-border cooperation program of the Republic of Northern Macedonia and the Republic of Albania 2014-2020, through the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance IPA 2.

The project "Lake Ohrid - bridging two countries in one destination" was announced today by the Municipality of Struga, and the goal, as Mayor Ramiz Merko pointed out, is to connect the two countries through Lake Ohrid, develop tourism and preserve cultural heritage in border cities.

- Citizens of both countries and tourists, through regular shipping lines at two border crossings will have the opportunity to visit several tourist destinations, which are based on the cultural heritage in these two cross-border areas, pointed out Merko.

For the realization of the project, emphasis, first of all, appropriate infrastructure should be provided, and the environmental aspect will be observed, ie it is planned to procure ships that will work on solar energy.

- Lake transport, but also tourism must have a green perspective and be oriented towards alternative energy sources, so we believed that the procurement of two ships, which will run on solar energy will make a direct contribution to raising public awareness for environmental protection. and promotion of the tourist offer in these areas, said Merko.

The project, as pointed out by the Municipality of Struga, will be supported by the European Commission with two million euros.

In recent years, the Association of Hoteliers of Macedonia came up with such a proposal, seeking the connection of the three border towns with regular ferry lines, which will preserve the environmental aspect and provide a greater tourist offer.
