US officials: Ukraine should be allowed to use US weapons on Russian territory

Senior US officials are increasingly seeking permission to use Western weapons against targets in Russia, The New York Times reports.

Since the first series of defense assistance from the United States in 2022, Ukraine has been under an absolute ban on weapons attacks against facilities located in the Russian Federation.

However, according to the media, the consensus around this policy is falling apart.

A renewed Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region and numerous attacks from the Russian border have sparked heated debate about easing restrictions.

House Speaker Mike Johnson also supported authorizing the use of American weapons on Russian soil.

"They have to be able to fight back." And I don't think it's right for us to manage those efforts," Johnson said, commenting on the Ukrainian military's efforts to stop the Russian invasion.

On May 22, a group of Congressmen called for Ukraine to be allowed to use weapons obtained from the United States to strike Russian soil.

The complaint alleges that the Ukrainians cannot effectively defend themselves because of the policies of the Biden administration.

"Our Ukrainian allies are seeking authorization to use certain types of weapons provided by the United States to conduct operations against strategic targets in Russia and Russian-controlled territory," part of the reaction said.

"It is important that the Biden administration authorizes Ukraine's military leadership to conduct the full range of operations necessary to respond to Russia's unprovoked attack on their sovereign soil," the congressmen's letter reads.

The congressmen also emphasized the need to increase the number of Ukrainian pilots being trained to fly the F-16 and to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
