The signing of a deal that was supposed to restart Sudan's democratic transition was delayed today, but both civilian and military officials vowed to meet to restore the situation to the pre-coup in October 2021, an official said.

Khaled Omar Youssef, one of the civilian officials fired and arrested during the coup of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, now a spokesman for the political process that brings together soldiers and civilians, has announced a new meeting for today, but not yet for the final solution.

After several weeks of negotiations on the various problematic issues that divide the army, the paramilitary and the civilian population, today everyone was supposed to meet and sign the final agreement, which outlines the broad outlines for the introduction of civilian authority and the election of democratic institutions.

Instead, they will meet in the afternoon to "arrange a new date for signing the final political agreement, which cannot be signed" due to the "absence of consensus on certain issues," Youssef's statement said.

Since the end of Omar al-Bashir's dictatorship in 2019, Sudan has seen an open power struggle, with two generals vying for supremacy: Burhane and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, better known as "Hemedti", the head of paramilitary forces for rapid support (FSR) that everyone else is very afraid of.

The reform of the security forces, that is, the integration of paramilitary formations into regular troops, is the essence of the dispute. Although both generals were in Khartoum last week, at the beginning of the negotiations, later they did not come because they do not agree on this issue.
