Obrador offers Assange asylum in letter to Biden
The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in a letter to his American counterpart, Joe Biden, once again offered asylum to the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange.
- I left a letter to the president about Assange, where I explained that he did not commit any serious crime, that he did not cause anyone's death, did not threaten any human rights, used his freedom and that his arrest would mean a permanent violation of freedom of expression, explained Lopez Obrador at a press conference.
Britain in June approved Assange's extradition to the United States to face criminal charges over WikiLeaks' release of classified US military records and diplomatic cables.
Earlier this year, Lopez Obrador said he had offered Assange asylum in a letter sent to former US President Donald Trump.
Last month, the president of Mexico called Assange "the best journalist of our time".
