Arrangements for the status of Ohrid by UNESCO: We should not allow ourselves to be on the list of endangered wealth

We have heard another alarm, we need to understand that this is a serious warning and we as a central and local government must do everything necessary to protect the status, not only for us, but also for the future of the country. It is the biggest tourist attraction in our country, said the Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Naser Nuredini regarding the UNESCO report on Ohrid and the lake.

In the Diary of Sitel TV, he said that after a year and a half of the visit of the UNESCO experts who made a report, there is progress and cooperation with the local authorities.

- What we are doing together with the Ministries of Culture, Transport and Local Affairs, and with the municipalities of Ohrid, Struga and Debrca is in order not to be on that list of endangered wealth. We should not allow that. As individuals, but also together we should do everything possible to prevent that, said Nuredini.

He pointed out that the MoEPP has a list of illegal buildings, but is not responsible for them. Some of the buildings have been demolished, he said, but much more needs to be done.

- It is very clear that what was built illegally is illegal and should not be there. A lot has been done on paper, things that cost money, but we do everything we can and it must not remain on paper. All those involved must do their job to solve this, said Nuredini, according to whom the competent institutions must be present on the ground and together with the local authorities to solve those problems because, as he said, there were illegal constructions, there are will.

Regarding the denial of Struga Mayor Ramiz Merko that there are such buildings in his municipality, the Minister replied that one should go to the field to see that the coast has no illegal buildings.

- I talked to him and he told me that there are no illegal buildings by the lake. I think there are other authorities, inspectors who need to go and talk to see if this is really the case. If so, it must be clarified, if not, then together with him and the municipalities we need to solve it. We should not divide the municipalities, they are all together in this. UNESCO does not say that it is a problem of the municipalities, but says that there are illegal constructions in the lake area. UNESCO does not say exactly where they are. It is our job as a state, we must determine it, said Nuredini, adding that both his party DUI and the Government understand that everything should be done to prevent endangering the status of Ohrid.

The ministry he manages is responsible for the environmental aspect and to date has managed to put Studenшкоiшкоko Blato under temporary protection.

- We put Lake Ohrid and Studenchishko Blato on the list of protected treasure of RAMSA. We additionally worked with the local institutions for them to respond to our plan a year and a half ago. It is indisputable that there is still a lot of work, we need to do more, added Nuredini.
