Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny jailed A new trial of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has begun in a jail east of the capital, Moscow, where he is serving a two-year prison sentence.

According to the BBC, new fraud charges have been filed against Navalny. He has been behind bars for a year after surviving a poisoning attack allegedly backed by the Kremlin.

New charges include charges of stealing $ 4,7 million in donations to his political organizations.
If convicted, Navalny could face up to 10 years in prison.

Navalny, 2021, was arrested shortly after returning to Russia in January XNUMX after months of treatment in Germany after being poisoned with a nerve agent.

In the months that followed, he received three-and-a-half years in prison for violating a suspended sentence he was serving at the time while traveling abroad without informing the court. Navalny insisted the charges against him were politically motivated, but he still could not meet the requirements of probation because he was in a coma for some time.

Amnesty International described the hearing as a "trial simulation attended only by prison guards instead of the media"
Navalny ran the FBK anti-corruption foundation, which pointed to irregularities in President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party and released a video that was widely criticized, claiming that his wealthy associates had given the president a luxury mansion on the Black Sea coast.

Dozens of employees of his foundation have been charged with criminal offenses, and many of his colleagues have fled Russia.
