New Georgian President, Former Footballer Kavelashvili, Pardons 613 Prisoners for Epiphany

Georgia's new president, Mikheil Kavelashvili, pardoned 613 prisoners today, in one of his first executive actions since taking office on December 29, Georgian media reported.

Kavelashvili, a former international footballer who played for Manchester City and several clubs in Switzerland, was the candidate of the ruling pro-Russian Georgian Dream party in the presidential election.

As reported by "Georgia today", Kavelashvili announced on Facebook that he was pardoning prisoners on the occasion of the Epiphany-Voditsi holiday, based on the powers granted to him by the Constitution, which are based on the principle of humanity and state interests.

As stated in the statement, those pardoned "have returned to their families and will once again be full members of society," TASS reports.

Kavelashvili was elected President of Georgia on December 14 in Parliament, by a majority vote of a commission composed of 300 members of parliament and local governments.
