No way to stop the mass murders across the US

Gun violence is becoming a fixture of American life – but the issue is highly political, pitting gun control advocates against sectors of the population that fiercely defend their right to bear arms, writes “BBC".

There have been more than 70 mass shootings across the US this year alone, with California experiencing two of the most notorious in January. Last night's school shooting in Nashville has once again raised the question of how the US government will handle gun control in the country.

Last night, footage emerged on social media of an armed girl walking into a school in Nashville and killing six people, including three children.

The American police said that the murder was committed by Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a transgender woman, who they say also had autism. The police shot her after arriving at the scene, but by then she had already killed six people.

The killer's mother called for more gun control

Norma Hale, the mother of the Nashville girl who killed six people, has called for increased gun control.

"It's very hard, that I lost my daughter today," Norma said, asking for privacy as her family deals with the aftermath of Audrey's massacre.

The police identified her as transgender. She was born a woman and is believed to have lived as a man under the name Aidan, the Guardian reports.

The mother's posts condemning school shootings and calling for increased gun control came after the massacre at Audrey's own school.

Norma and her husband Ronald are described as very nice and religious neighbors. For now, the motive for the massacre committed by their daughter is not officially known.

A search of the killer's home

Sources close to the family told The Daily Beast that Audrey was a "very calm girl" and recently announced that she had changed her gender, but was not happy with the reactions of those close to her, claiming that transgender people in the United States are "too discriminated against."

"Relatively recently she announced that she is transgender, identifying as he/him," the source told the outlet, requesting anonymity to avoid "further family strife."

A search of Hale's home turned up "drawn maps of the school, detailing surveillance, entry points, etc.," police said, as well as a manifesto and some writings regarding this date, the actual incident, how it all unfolds.

Inside the car Hale was driving and parked on the school campus Friday morning, officers found additional material written by her, police said.

The most mass murders in the United States

While the United States does not have a single definition of "mass shooting," the Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. Their numbers include shootings that occur both in homes and in public places.

The deadliest such attack, in Las Vegas in 2017, killed more than 50 people and injured 500. However, the vast majority of mass shootings leave fewer than 10 dead.
