Navratilova: Ban on transgender athletes in women's competitions is a step in the right direction
The famous former tennis player proposes the introduction of an "open" category to solve the problem of transgender athletes
Former tennis star Martina Navratilova is concerned about the growing presence of transgender athletes in the world.
She believes that strict rules should be introduced in order to restore equality in sports. Navratilova proposes an interesting solution.
- I think the best idea is to have a "biological women" category and an "open" category. That "open" category would be for everyone, that is, for men who identify as men, for women who identify as women, for women who identify as men and for men who identify as women - says Navratilova.
The nine-time Wimbledon champion believes that when one goes through puberty as a male, one gains a physical advantage.
– There is no way to undo that physical advantage. If you can breathe faster and more deeply, that's a big advantage in the top sport. That is why banning transgender athletes in women's competitions is a step in the right direction - says Navratilova.
