In the past twenty years, the number of people in Germany working multiple jobs has more than doubled. Most of the time we are talking about jobs for workers who have lower qualifications and for which the minimum wage guaranteed by law is paid, which according to the secretary of the German trade union, Philip Schumann, is not enough at all.

"With a guaranteed hourly wage of twelve euros and a 42-hour work week, you can earn just under 2.200 euros gross. That's only about 60 percent of the average income in Germany, and that's not enough to live on," says Schumann.

In Germany, the salary is usually expressed in gross amount, which can be a surprise for foreigners who come to work in this country.

Namely, contributions for pension and health insurance, as well as church and income tax, are deducted from that amount, which depends on several factors, such as marital status and number of children. All in all, if your salary is 2.200 gross, about 1.500 euros will be deposited into your account, writes Deutsche Welle.

Trade unionist Schumann believes that the minimum hourly wage should be from 17 to 18 euros, but Germany is threatened by the "American style", where people often have to work multiple jobs. In the morning you deliver newspapers, during the day you work in a courier service, in the afternoon in a bookstore, and in the evening as a waiter... Last year, the German government increased the minimum hourly wage to 12 euros, but inflation and price increases ate up almost everything that the workers got from that decision, writes Politika.
