Scientists have found that healthy elderly people who consumed concentrated juice from blueberries, showed a significant increase in brain activity, blood flow and even memory compared to the placebo group after just a few weeks, reports Ochsner Health.

Antioxidants, especially flavonoids, in blueberries have been shown to promote these effects, as well as offer other benefits for brain health, including:

– Reducing the risk of dementia
– Reducing the effects of Alzheimer's disease
– Preventing age-related memory loss
– Strengthening of brain cells
– Increasing concentration and focus
– Improving mental health

Blueberries are also low in calories and sugar. Blueberries contain about one-third the calories of other fruits such as bananas, with about 20 percent less sugar. They are one of the richest berries and are rich in fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese. Blueberries are full of water, which makes them hydrating. Each blueberry contains about 85 percent water.

Fresh or frozen?

When it comes to the debate between choosing fresh or frozen blueberries, the answer is…both! Whether consumed fresh, frozen, canned or as an extract, blueberries offer countless health benefits. In fact, frozen blueberries – especially when frozen at the time of harvest – are just as nutritious as fresh blueberries. Just remember to check labels carefully to make sure there is no added sugar.

Tips for buying blueberries

To save on costs, buy fresh blueberries when they are in season and the price is low. You can then freeze them to enjoy later.

Blend blueberries into smoothies, add them to Greek yogurt, or simply enjoy them fresh, straight from the bag.

Blueberries won't necessarily solve cognitive problems or make us instantly smarter. However, they do help a lot.
