In the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria today, more than 1.000 people died in northern Syria alone.

The death toll in government-held areas has risen to 570, the country's health ministry said.

At least 430 people have died in rebel-held parts of the country's northwest, according to the White Helmets rescue group.

Control of northern Syria is divided between the government, Kurdish-led forces and other conflicting rebel groups.
