The biggest climate changes in Macedonia observed in the last 10 years, hit agriculture and the economy

The biggest climate changes in the country have been observed in the last 10 years, the most affected are farmers and businessmen. This was concluded at today's discussion "It is possible" organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning and the Climate Change Platform.

The Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Naser Nuredini also attended the debate, saying that the protection of forests is crucial because they are the lungs of the country.

- It is necessary to protect our forests. Areas where trees are cut down should be afforested to protect biodiversity, which is one of the goals of the EU accession process. In the past few years we have made great progress in the field of protection of areas, first to emphasize the proclamation of the Osogovo mountain range as a protected area, it was one of the first declarations of a protected area, for decades there was no such act. Furthermore, the first reading of the law on declaring Shara a national park in the Parliament, for which there are only a few weeks left until the proclamation of Shara as a national park. We can consider Vodno as the lungs of Skopje, so in our proposal from the Government is to protect Vodno, ie not to cut the forest and not to urbanize. All this is in line with our climate change strategy, the more greenery we have the greater the contribution, concluded the Minister.

According to Aggie Veres, Deputy Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, everyone must make efforts to reduce climate change.

That climate change is visible and largely present, confirmed Nina Aleksovska, a representative of the HMS, who said that if before the eighties there was a heat wave only periodically, from 1987 until today, the heat wave occurs every year.

-The most common climatic events on the territory of our country are the occurrence of hot and cold waves, the occurrence of days with measured maximum temperatures, as well as days with minimum temperatures below zero, calming icy days, occurrence of tropical nights…. temperature, there is occurrence of days with very heavy rainfall, as well as an increase in dry and rainy periods. In the past 70 years, certain trends have been observed, for example, there is a decreasing trend of icy / icy days and the appearance of cold waves, in contrast, there is an increasing trend of summer days, tropical nights, said Aleksovska.

She added that the characteristic for all these climate events is that the biggest changes have occurred in the last 10 years, the last decade, she said, is the warmest since there are continuous measurements on the territory of the country.

According to the participants, this is not good news especially for agriculture, because farmers manage 50% of the land in our country and use 60 to 80% of the water, the projected reduction of precipitation and higher temperatures, increase the risk not only of product quality but also the survival of the farmers themselves, and that it is therefore very important that they get involved in these climate change policies.

President of the National Federation of Farmers Vaska Mojsovska stressed the concern of food producers, who, according to her, face huge damage every year caused by ice, hail and curved rains.

- We farmers, food producers, are most affected by climate change, and unfortunately in the last decade we have huge problems in food production caused by climate change. It is more and more difficult for people to produce food in any branch, so concrete measures should be taken, concrete steps, so that we do not have too much loss, and thus the finances of the farmers themselves and the state budget, warned Mojsovska.

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, Arianit Hoxha He noted that the Ministry had planned to adjust the measures envisaged for easier adaptation to climate change.

Anita Kodzoman, coordinator of the Environment and Risk and Crisis Management Program, noted that draft strategies are being developed to reduce risks through parallel identification of climate change risks. He emphasized that not only the institutions, but also the citizens themselves have an important role.

On the other hand, in order to protect these branches, Professor Dushko Mukaetov from the Agricultural Institute in Skopje, said that a large set of measures is needed, which should be simple to apply.

- These should not be measures that will require great technological knowledge by farmers, they should be designed not to take much time, because anyway their agenda is overloaded, it can only repel the producers of those measures, as well as not to be too expensive, and if they are expensive to provide financial support, these are the basic parameters when proposing measures. A complete and comprehensive program is needed, theoretical training, practical training, as well as material support is needed, concluded Mukaetov.

Two panel discussions have already taken place within the "Possible" event, one on the topic "National contributions to climate change in focus, to achieve the global goal of 1,5 degree climate change with an ambitious" Climate ActionSega "held on 21 April and the second held on April 27 on "Green recovery, to involve the private sector in activities to address climate change"
