The whole world found out who Nadia Comaneci was at the age of 14 when she became a real star and became one of the legends of gymnastics because at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, she received the highest grade at the two-height loom exercise - 10.
It is interesting that the scoreboard that then showed the scores of the judges did not have the opportunity to show the number 10 and therefore its score was written 1,0. The audience immediately reacted with whistles and protests, due to which the judges had to explain to little Comaneci that in fact she had achieved a historic success. Nadia Comaneci became one of the youngest Olympic champions in history.
He finished the Montreal Games with as many as five medals, won gold in multi-color, two-height loom and beam, won a silver medal in team competition, and won a bronze medal for the ground floor exercise. Four years later, he won four medals, two gold and two silver at the Moscow Olympics.
However, outside of sports, the private life of young Nadia Comaneci was a real horror staged by the then Communist Party of Romania headed by Nicolae Ceausescu and the secret service.
Her coaches, Bella and Carta Caroli, fled to the United States during an exhibition in 1981, while Nadia returned to Romania, which was a big mistake. Until 1989, she lived in a cage due to the constant control by the state, namely the Ceausescu couple.
Nadia Comaneci was even forced to have a love affair with her son Nico Ceausescu. The dictator's son found out in 1987 about Nadia's relationship with American actor Stefan Bianchi and that she was pregnant with him, after which he sent secret service agents after him. He received a threat to forget Nadia or he would be killed. On the second day of this event, Nadja Komanedzi lost the child and tried to commit suicide.
- Even today, when I remember those events, my eyes fill with tears. I did not tell anyone what was happening to me. Only my brother and his wife knew who secretly brought me to the Hungarian border. "I was afraid that my mother would die of grief when she found out, but I could no longer live in that country," Komaneci recalled.
Nadia finally managed to flee to the United States in 1989 in search of a better life, but the beginnings did not promise much. She was held hostage by Constantine Panait, who allowed her to flee Romania for $ 5.000 and reach the United States via Hungary and Austria. He realized that he could make good money on the best gymnast of all time and charged for all interviews and guest appearances on TV or radio shows. It is estimated that Constantine earned as much as $ 200.000 in this way, of which Nadia did not receive a single dollar.
With the help of friends, she managed to get rid of Konstantin Panait a year later and move to Montreal, Canada. But even in Montreal, life was not honey and milk. She earned money by advertising gymnastics and aerobics equipment, not infrequently underwear.
Life began to improve when she returned to Oklahoma City in 1991 to help American gymnast and Olympic champion Bart Conner at his school for young gymnasts. They were engaged in 1994 and married two years later near Bucharest. Conner's wedding was her first visit to Romania since the fall of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
- When I was having the wedding in Bucharest, there were as many as 10.000 people on the streets. People did not go to work that day, it was an emotional moment for me because then I saw how much people cared for me - Nadja Komaneci recalls her first arrival in the homeland.
It is interesting that Nadia wanted the then President of Romania, Ion Iliescu, to be the best man at the wedding, but because of her position she had to refuse the invitation, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hillary Clinton, Robert De Niro were invited to the wedding.
Their son Dylan was born in 2006, and Nadia has dual citizenship, Romanian and US, while Bart changed his religion and became a Christian out of love for his wife.
Nadja and Bart still regularly participate in show competitions, and donate the money to charity.
