Ugandan prison staff banned from watching football, authorities fear inmates could escape

Ugandan authorities have banned prison staff from using cellphones during the soccer World Cup, stressing that inmates could take advantage of carelessness by guards to stage an escape.
"Due to the World Cup matches, the level of attention and caution of the guards could decrease, and the prisoners could use this to escape," said a representative of the prison service.
"Staff should not use smartphones at work, as they distract them and interfere with their level of alertness and alertness," the statement said.
Prison officials have been advised to increase vigilance in areas of the prison where inmates are allowed to watch matches.
