For every hundred thousand vaccinated, 900 lives are saved!

A 99 percent efficiency in preventing death from covid-19 would mean that if 100 out of 100 unvaccinated people die, 10 out of 900 vaccinated people will die if they become infected. That's 100 lives saved per XNUMX vaccinated, Babacic said

If most seniors as well as the vulnerable are vaccinated, the new wave of coronavirus should not be accompanied by a proportionate increase in hospitalizations and deaths as has been the case in the past.

This is the opinion of Haris Babacic, a doctoral student in Sweden at the Karolinska Institute, after positive tests for covid-19 were registered in Macedonia, despite two doses of vaccine, there is even one deceased person who has previously received two doses of "Sinofarm".

The medical expert explains that even if you become infected with covid-19 after two doses of the vaccine, the patient's clinical picture will not be as severe and is unlikely to lead to hospitalization as if they had not been vaccinated.

No procedure guarantees absolute protection

"Regarding the case in which a vaccinated person became infected and died of covid-19, which led to some public panic, I feel the need to clarify what, in fact, means the high effectiveness of vaccines in preventing the fatal outcome of covid-19. I do not know a procedure that guarantees absolute XNUMX% protection from any disease or death in any field, not even in medicine. So it is with vaccines. "Efficacy studies can estimate that a vaccine is one hundred percent effective in a given experimental design, but in reality it often happens that the actual efficacy, that is, the effectiveness, is a few percent lower." Babacic explains.

He explains by example how many people would be saved if they were vaccinated with two doses.

"A 99 percent efficiency in preventing death from covid-19 would mean that if out of 100 unvaccinated thousands die, out of 100 vaccinated 10 will die if they become infected. It does not mean that we will never see people die of Covid-19 again if we all vaccinate them. We will see, but the difference will be huge, compared to not vaccinating the population. With the given example, they are 900 lives saved per 100 thousand vaccinated. "I hope this will resolve the public dilemmas if there is any confusion." says Babacic.

Everyone should contribute and be vaccinated, say the Ministry

Vaccination is the only way to end a pandemic. In this common struggle, we all share the responsibility equally. Every citizen who is not immunized puts at risk his own, but also the health of others. "In order to prevent the return of restrictive measures and to return to normal everyday life, it is important for each of us to give our contribution and to be vaccinated," the Ministry of Health addressed the public yesterday.

According to yesterday's statistics of the Institute of Public Health, the 47 new cases of people with covid-19 out of 3.593 tests means that the growth trend continues. Health officials are adamant that mass immunization is the only way to control the coronavirus. So far, half a million citizens have been vaccinated with one dose, and 360 thousand citizens have received two doses.

- We must keep this pace. We have an excellent system and facilities for vaccination. All that is needed is the awareness and conscience of the citizens. The new wave is more and more certain. He did not avoid many European countries, he probably will not avoid us either. It is up to us whether we will welcome him vaccinated in the largest possible percentage, we will alleviate him and we will save human lives. I am looking for maximum responsibility, but above all support and involvement. Spread the message that vaccination is the only way to end the pandemic - says the Minister of Health Venko Filipce.

The fact that there are rare deaths of people infected with covid-19 after receiving two doses of the vaccine should be taken into account in the context of their basic health status.

For example, a 62-year-old patient from Tetovo, who died a few weeks after receiving the second dose of Sinofarm vaccine, had three chronic illnesses, including kidney disease, heart disease and hypertension.

Other countries in the region report fully vaccinated deaths, but the numbers are low. In Montenegro, according to the local Institute of Public Health, two people who were fully vaccinated died.

- In some groups such as the elderly with weaker immunity, we can expect a lack of immune response as in these two cases. However, vaccination provides a high degree of protection, over 90 percent of severe disease and fatal outcome - says Milena Popovic Samardzic, epidemiologist at the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro.

What are the experiences in other countries

Recent analyzes by the Italian Institute of Public Health show that since February, almost 99 percent of covid-19 deaths have been reported in people who have not been fully vaccinated.

The death toll in those receiving two doses of the vaccine is particularly low, at about one percent.

These are people who had health problems before being infected with the coronavirus, with an average age of over 88 years. The ratio between the number of new cases and the total population is ten times lower in vaccinated people than in unvaccinated people.

In Spain, since the end of June, more than 83 percent of newly infected people have been unvaccinated and 11,4 percent have been incompletely vaccinated. In In the United Kingdom, 60 per cent of those hospitalized were incompletely vaccinated, and in Belgium almost half of those hospitalized with a severe clinical picture did not receive both doses of the vaccine. In the United States, almost 100 percent of all hospitalizations are in the non-immunized population, and according to data from June, 98 to 99 percent of those who died were not vaccinated at all.
