9.000 hectares of forest burned on Mount Serta - Macedonian forests with initial damage assessment
According to initial estimates, the total damage from 38 fires from January to June this year is more than 73 million denars.
The public company "Macedonian Forests" announced the initial estimates of the damage caused by the fires. According to them, 9.000 hectares of forest burned on Mount Serta, where strong fires ravaged for days. On the side towards Negotino, more than 5.500 hectares were burned, and on the Stip side, nearly 3.000 hectares were burned, or a total of about 8.500 hectares. According to initial estimates, the total damage from 38 fires from January to June of this year is more than 73 million denars. In the past period, the fire also raged in Radovishko and Strumichko. 197 hectares have been razed on Mount Plachkovica, and 400 hectares in Strumichko.
- First of all, it is a forest that is of poor quality, it is a weak oak forest, but the most important thing to say is that it will mean an ecological bomb for the region and beyond. This is what we and all social actors in Macedonia must keep in mind - said Kire Mihailov, Deputy General Director of Macedonian Forests. After the fires are extinguished, the mountain is cleaned, and then the afforestation will begin. But national forest nurseries do not have enough seedlings to restore burned areas.
As a reminder, in the period from June to September 2021, 142 forest fires occurred in the country, of which 11.420 hectares of the area under the forest were affected. According to the data of the State Statistics Office, out of the total damage from the fires, forests from mixed plantations were mostly affected, which accounted for 52,2 percent, forests from deciduous species with 30,2 percent, forests from coniferous species with 10,1 percent, while the terrestrial vegetation participated with 7,4 percent. From June to September 2021, the burnt wood mass in the forests amounted to 482.106 m3, and the amount of the estimated material damage was over 2 billion denars.
