Moldova withdraws from Eurovision just days after national auditions

Moldovan state broadcaster TVM has confirmed that it is withdrawing from this year's Eurovision Song Contest, which is due to be held in Basel.

According to foreign media, the news comes just days after the country held auditions for its national final, and it appears those auditions played a big role in their decision.

Namely, the director of the Moldova 1 network, Corneliu Durnescu, stated that the lack of quality "created a negative perception" of Eurovision.

"The decision was not easy, but necessary in the current context. This year's national selection highlighted certain challenges, including the decline in public interest and the overall quality of the songs and artistic performances. This created a negative perception among experts and the public, highlighting the need for significant reform in the selection process," he said.

Together with the head of the Moldovan Eurovision delegation, Daniela Cruda, he said the decision came “after a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative and artistic challenges.” They even included music experts who also supported their decision.

Despite the withdrawal, state television will broadcast live both semi-finals and the grand final in Basel, offering viewers the opportunity to follow the match. Given the quality of the show, participation was not considered value for money. According to the statement, the EBU is charging Moldova a participation fee of 21.486 euros.

We remind you that Switzerland will host the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The competition will be held at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel. The semi-final evenings will take place on 13 and 15 May, and the grand final is scheduled for Saturday, 17 May.
