The peacekeepers in Doha rush to outrun the hawks in Tehran
Until the last hour, it will not be known whether the new series of talks will be attended by representatives of Hamas, which does not agree with the format
Diplomats from Qatar and Egypt, in cooperation with the United States, are making every effort to revive the frozen ceasefire negotiations in Gaza to prevent a dangerous spillover and flare-up of the conflict throughout the region.
A new series of talks has been announced for today in Doha, but it will not be known until the last hour whether representatives of Hamas will attend. The Palestinian group confirmed that it will not participate in the new round of peace negotiations, because it does not agree with the format.
- The new negotiations allow the occupier to impose new conditions and use his labyrinths to carry out more massacres - said the representative Sami Abu Zuhri.
He added that Hamas is committed to the proposal presented to it on July 2, based on the resolution of the United Nations Security Council and the address of US President Joe Biden. Regarding such a format, Zuhri stated that Hamas is ready to discuss the implementation mechanism.
The Israeli government has announced that it will send its own delegation to the negotiations. Contrary to the announcements from Hamas, the United States expressed hope that negotiations and a cease-fire agreement are possible, which would also prevent the announced Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel.
Iran's new reform-minded president, Massoud Pezeshkian, has announced that he will respect Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's decision to punish Israel for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh while he was visiting Tehran. But three anonymous Iranian officials confirmed that Tehran would refrain from retaliatory attacks only if the Gaza peace talks were resumed. It is interpreted as another pressure to accept the conditions that Hamas sets for participating in the negotiations.
One of the sources, a senior security official, said that both Iran and groups such as Hezbollah under its control would carry out the threat if they judged that the negotiations were going nowhere or that Israel was dragging them out. He, however, did not explain how long it would take for such a conclusion to be reached in Tehran.
A "restrained response" is also possible, which would not jeopardize the negotiations.
- We hope that our response will be implemented in a time and in a way that will not jeopardize the potential ceasefire - said the mission of Iran to the United Nations.
Israel, on the other hand, announced that it is ready to respond immediately to any action by Iran. The US has sent the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln with its battle group to the region, as well as the nuclear guided missile submarine Georgia. Nearby, in the Gulf of Oman, is the aircraft carrier "Theodore Roosevelt", several F-22 fighter jets have been sent to bases in the region, and the large amphibious ship "Wasp" with F-35 aircraft is in the waters of Mediterranean Sea.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, on the other hand, approved the sale of US military equipment to Israel worth over 20 billion dollars. The Pentagon clarified that the equipment includes anti-tank grenades, F-15 fighter jets, anti-aircraft missiles and combat vehicles.
Moscow and China also carry out their peacekeeping missions. Secretary of the Russian National Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, visited Tehran, described the killing of the Hamas leader as "tragic" and said that "such a thing cannot be avoided." Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Bogdanov stated that "Moscow calls on everyone to refrain from escalating the situation, so as not to turn it into a disaster for everyone in the region."
- Political ways must be found to solve the current problems - said Bogdanov.
Both Russia and Iran have no interest in igniting a war in the Middle East. Iran seeks to maintain good relations with the West to close the door on negotiations to lift international sanctions. Russia, on the other hand, is trying to sell modern weapons to Iran, and also to buy drones that it uses in the invasion of Ukraine.
China, on the other hand, is trying to assert itself as an alternative mediator for resolving the crises in the Middle East. China last year brokered an agreement between enemies Iran and Saudi Arabia to restore diplomatic relations, and in July in Beijing, representatives of Palestinian opposition groups, led by Hamas and Fatah, pledged to cooperate in forming a future government.
- China supports all efforts aimed at achieving a permanent and general ceasefire in Gaza and is ready, together with the international community, to promote the calming of the regional situation in order to avoid further escalation of conflicts - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said .
