What happened, although in accordance with the provisions of the law, was wrong. I didn't know about it, and obviously, I would never have allowed it, the Greek Prime Minister said Kyriakos Mitsotakis about the monitoring of the mobile phone of the MEP and current leader of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, reported the correspondent of MIA from Athens.

In a video statement, the Greek prime minister explained that a few days ago he was informed that from September 2021, for three months, the National Intelligence Service had legally monitored the mobile phone of Nikos Androulakis, while he was still an MEP, and before he was elected as the leader of the party.

The monitoring procedure, as indicated by Mitsotakis, was approved by a senior prosecutor, exactly as provided by the provision of the law passed in 2018 by the previous government.

The monitoring lasted for three months and was automatically terminated, as required by law, a few days after Androulakis was elected president of PASOK - KINAL.

"Although everything was legal, the National Intelligence Service underestimated the political dimension of the specific procedure. It was formally adequate, but politically unacceptable. It should not have happened, causing cracks in public confidence in the National Security Services," Mitsotakis said.

He added that although the entire process concerned a prominent political figure, there were shortcomings in the management of the procedure and therefore the director of the Service was replaced, while the Secretary General of the Government, according to Mitsotakis, "assumed the objective political responsibility" with his resignation.

In addition, the Greek Prime Minister presented changes in the work of the National Intelligence Service, which the Government will propose.
