The measures to limit the transport and slaughter of animals are extended for another week, announced the Minister of Rural Development Costas Tsiaras at a briefing on the plague of sheep and goats.

Tsiaras pointed out that the movement of animals poses the greatest risk for the spread of the plague of small ruminants. He announced that in a letter to the EU he would request that the plague of small ruminants be a priority on the agenda.

In addition, he announced that a committee of experts is being formed. The plague applies exclusively to sheep and goats, it is not transmitted to humans and does not pose a problem for public health, repeated the Minister of Rural Development.

He also emphasized that the European directive was implemented from the beginning, with measures taken to prevent the spread of the disease. He also pointed to the fact that through the search, cases were discovered in different regions.

Scrutiny teams have been formed to close the circle as quickly as possible,” he said. Tsiaras said that 13.000 animals were killed in Greece. As he said, the Government will stand by the farmers who are damaged. He further mentioned that after the completion of the registration, there will be a valuation to support the herdsmen.
