Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that everything Russian President Vladimir Putin says should be taken seriously.

In her speech at the ceremonial opening of the "Helmut Kohl" foundation, Merkel emphasized that this also explicitly refers to Putin's nuclear threats.

- Take the words seriously. Don't immediately dismiss them as a bluff, but face them seriously. It is not a sign of weakness, but a proof of political smart action, she stressed.

"Helmut Kohl would do everything to preserve and protect the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine, but he would never lose sight of the 'day after,'" the former German chancellor said.

With this, Merkel indirectly expressed her position on the situation in Ukraine.

After leaving office, she said she would not comment on day-to-day political issues, so she is now "shaping" her stance in response to how Chancellor Cole would respond to the crisis in 2022.

She added that Cole "at the same time will always take into account what seems unthinkable at the moment, which is how to restore relations with Russia".
