Meloni on her way to become the Prime Minister of Italy
Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni has won Italy's election, according to election polls, so she is on track to become the country's first female prime minister, reports "BBC".
If the election results are confirmed, Meloni will form Italy's most right-wing government since World War II.
The RAI exit poll predicts that she will win between 22 and 26 percent of the vote, ahead of her closest rival Enrico Letta from the center left. Several other election polls give the right-wing coalition an advantage of 41 to 45 percent of the vote.
Center-left coalition parties will lag far behind the right, with somewhere between 25,5 and 29,5 percent.
The turnout in yesterday's elections was low, some 64,7 percent by the time the polls closed, the Italian Ministry of the Interior said. Particularly low interest in the elections was observed in the southern regions, including Sicily.
