Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said his government is working on an appeal from Canada due to the high number of asylum applications from Mexicans.

According to the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board, between January and September 2023, Mexicans filed the most asylum applications – 17.500, far more than Haitians, who filed just over 8.500.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week that Ottawa is in talks with Mexico to reduce the number of asylum applications from Mexicans. According to him, some people receive support from organized crime to reach Canadian territory.
