Russia is ready to continue talks with Ukraine, but only if Kiev recognizes the reality on the ground and the proposals of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia and Chairman of the United Russia Party Dmitry Medvedev said today.

"We are ready to continue negotiations with Ukraine, but only if Kiev recognizes the reality on the ground and the proposals presented by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his speech at the Foreign Ministry this year," Medvedev said at a press conference after the talks. with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, reported Tass.

He added that at the meeting with the Chinese leader, the topics of Ukraine and Syria were raised, as well as issues of bilateral cooperation, "taking into account changes in international politics, including the Syrian crisis."

Answering journalist questions about the situation in Syria, Medvedev said that he is not sure that the unity of Syria will be able to be maintained after the change of power in the country, that all peoples and representatives of different religions will be able to continue to exist together.

"I have not yet heard the answer to the question of how it will be possible to find a consensus on the interests of Sunnis, Shiites, Alawites, Druze and Christians," he pointed out.

Medvedev recalled that for some time Russia gave serious support to the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, because "it understood what threats the possible collapse of Syria poses to the whole world, following the scenario of other countries in the Middle East."
