Nurses testify for Free Press: We do not have enough protection, and citizens are unscrupulous

After a test point for the covid-19 virus was opened at the Jane Sandanski polyclinic, nurses and doctors feared for their health. Although it is well known that the checkpoint is set up at a separate entrance and the health workers who perform the test wear protective equipment, the danger of coronavirus disease is felt by the medical staff who are not in direct contact with possible patients.

A nurse employed at the polyclinic points out that they are not sufficiently protected, because the authorities think that they are not at risk, but that is not the case, she says. He shares with the readers of Free Press the daily routine and the approach they have to the patients.

- We schedule an appointment for the patients through my appointment after they answer the survey questions by phone. Only if they answer all the questions positively, they have the right to test. If only one of the questions is negative, for example they have not been in contact with someone from abroad, but still have a high fever, cough or other difficulty, they insist on visiting a family doctor. We can not forbid them. And when they come, no one knows if they are carriers of the virus - explains the nurse.

She adds that they have a mask, gloves and hats made of protective equipment that are provided by private practices and given to employees.

- It is not true that we have no contact with patients. Due to the condition with the coronavirus, doctors from the specialist surgeries are on duty at the Infectious Diseases Clinic. Therefore, we do not refer patients, but perform all necessary interventions. For example, we take sutures, put a catheter because the urology clinic does not work, we do an ECG if a patient with tachycardia comes. Not only are we in contact, but we are also in touch with the patients - explains the nurse, who wished to remain anonymous, but is also known to the editorial office.

Laboratories are also in direct contact with patients and have scarce protective equipment

- The laboratory is always full, just as it was before the virus appeared. Patients come for a blood test, we can not return them, but we work with fear, because we are not sufficiently protected. We do not have spacesuits or visors - complains the laboratory assistant we talked to.

The curfew is not respected in the ambulances

If you come to the Jane Sandanski polyclinic, after 11 o'clock you will see that the curfew is not respected. Although citizens over the age of 67 are not allowed to be away from home, the ambulance is full of 80-year-olds, possibly older. We tell them that they should not be out, but they do not understand. The police never came to check to see if the curfew is respected, adds our interlocutor and emphasizes that there is a great indiscipline among the citizens, because many of them go to the doctor without a mask and gloves.
