Chinese police say they are searching for a man who killed seven people in the city of Wuhan and then jumped off a bridge.

The 39-year-old suspect killed a family of five and then two other people on the run, Wuhan police said.

He came to the home of the interim secretary of China's ruling Communist Party in a village near Wuhan on Sunday night, arguing that something should be resolved with him. The party secretary and his wife were found dead, as were their daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.

During the escape, the suspect also killed a passer-by and a driver whose car he stole.

The killer fled to the bridge over the Yangtze River, from where he jumped into the river early yesterday morning.
