Mike Pence has officially announced his candidacy for the Republican Party's presidential nomination
Former US Vice President Mike Pence, who served loyally to Donald Trump, but turned against him after the 2021 Capitol attack, today officially announced his candidacy for the Republican Party's presidential nomination for the 2024 election
"I will always be proud of the progress we have made together for a stronger and more prosperous America," Pence stressed in a video message, criticizing incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden but not naming Trump directly.
It is very rare for a former vice president to run against the president he worked for. This has only happened a handful of times in American history.
Pence faces a tough task as he has the support of just 5 percent of Republican voters, trailing Trump by 44 percentage points, according to an Ipsos Reuters poll in May.
Pence, who turns 64, will face Trump and at least ten other candidates for the Republican presidential nomination in what is essentially a battle between the two front-runners, Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Pence joins a growing number of Republican candidates, including Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Tim Scott and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
