The Seine river has been banned for swimming since 1923, due to high pollution and the presence of dangerous bacteria. The organizer of the LOI Paris 2024 has a plan that costs 1,4 billion euros to clean the Seine and to hold the Olympic marathon and triathlon in this river. Public bathing will start from 2025

A 1,4 billion euro clean-up of the River Seine is underway to make the water clean for some swimming events at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As well as playing a central role in the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 26, 2024, the river is set to be suitable for competitive events including marathon swimming and triathlon.

After the Games, Paris City Hall pledged to reopen the river for public bathing in the summer of 2025, with around 20 potential bathing spots being considered, five in the city itself and the rest a little further outside Paris.

Swimming in the Seine has been prohibited since 1923, due to high levels of bacteria and heavy pollution. Since Paris won the 2024 Olympic Games, it has accelerated the cleanup and spurred major investments in improving water quality and reducing pollution.
