Lithuanian border guards will be equipped with heavy weapons

Lithuania wants to provide its border guards with heavy weapons. This was stated by the Lithuanian Minister of the Interior, Agne Bilotaite.

She stressed that this decision was made in response to the lessons learned from the Russian war against Ukraine.

"The Ministry of Defense will contribute to equipping the border guards with heavy weapons." I would not like to elaborate because it is still being specified," Bilotaite added.

At the same time, Rustamas Liubajevas, commander of the state border service, said that the weapons to be transferred would include both mobile and stationary weapons. The weapon will be intended for the destruction of manpower and light military equipment.

"The weapons that we plan to acquire in the first phase will not require special training," said the head of the SBGS.

In April this year, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense implemented a comprehensive reinforcement of a number of border sections together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The decision was made after the conversation between Defense Minister Laurinas Kasciunas and Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite.

First, they discussed comprehensive approaches to strengthening the border and building appropriate fortifications there.

In addition, the proposal to strengthen the armament of the border guards was considered, namely the transfer of machine guns from the stocks of the armed forces.

In addition, the issue of creating an additional number of shooting ranges to enable border guards to conduct more intensive training was also discussed.

It should be noted that strengthening the border should provide protection against saboteurs and protect critical infrastructure.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Lithuania is strengthening its armed forces as part of its defense against a potential Russian invasion.
