Latvia got a new president – ​​the previous head of diplomacy Rinkevičs, who is a declared homosexual

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, was elected as the new president of the country of Denmark in the parliament. He was the head of Latvian diplomacy for 12 years.

"I will do everything to make our country prosperous and safe," Rinkevichs said after the vote in parliament. He publicly came out as gay in 2014 and was the first politician in Latvia to do so. Political power in the Baltic country is mainly concentrated in the Government and the Prime Minister, while the Latvian President has a mainly ceremonial role.

Latvia is a member of the EU and NATO and strongly supports Ukraine in the war against Russian aggression and its accession to the EU and NATO. The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski congratulated Rinkevich on his election, saying he was a "true friend of Ukraine".

Before becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rinkevičs worked as a foreign policy analyst for the public "Latvijas Radio", and then in the Ministry of Defense and in the Office of the President.
