In one of the numerous videos, a user of this social network who tried this trend claims that the so-called a sleep trick helped her sleep better and that breathing through the nose, as opposed to the mouth, can prevent bad breath and gum disease.Another popular video shared by health coach Corey Rodriguez last year makes similar claims and has more than 5 million views.

"The goal is to breathe through your nose while you sleep, not through your mouth," he explains in the video. Rodriguez added that he tapes his mouth every night, claiming that it has given him better oral hygiene and rid him of unpleasant snoring and dry mouth.Experts quickly dismissed such claims made on TikTok. The British Sleep Foundation found that side effects of mouth taping can include irritation on or around the lips from the tape and sleep disruption due to difficulty breathing through the nose.Meanwhile, sleep expert James Wilson said the benefits of nose breathing are not worth it. about the risk of mouth sticking.

"Unfortunately, taping your mouth is an extreme way to encourage nose-only breathing that can cause serious health risks," he told Newsweek.

The risk for people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea is huge. It is a condition in which pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing occur during sleep.

"If that's the case, gagging will make your health worse and can contribute to more serious problems like heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and stroke, especially if it's done while you're suffering from sleep apnea," he says.
