A doctor discovered the drugs that we often take, which cause hair loss
Antidepressants, blood thinners and acne creams, which are taken by tens of millions of people, can cause alopecia. Although hair loss is a natural process of aging, especially for men, anesthetist Zain Hassan reveals that five common medications can speed up the process.
Dr Hassan warned his 636.000 social media followers via a TikTok video: “If you want to keep your hair, you need to know about these five remedies. Even if you don't take them, you probably know someone who does."
Antidepressants
Research has shown that some antidepressants can cause hair loss in men and women. A 2018 study found that bupropion users had the highest risk of hair loss among nine common antidepressants. About one in a thousand patients reported this side effect.
Acne remedies
Medicines such as isotretinoin, which is used to treat acne, can also cause hair loss, especially if taken in high doses. A 2022 study found that six percent of patients taking acne medication experienced hair loss. Side effects such as skin sensitivity and peeling are also common.
Blood thinners
Medicines used to reduce the risk of blood clots, such as heparin, are associated with hair loss that usually begins two to four months after starting treatment. Hair loss is reversible after stopping the drug.
Beta blockers
Medicines to control blood pressure, such as metoprolol, can rarely cause hair loss. Side effects such as fatigue, dizziness and depression are also possible.
Cancer drugs
Tamoxifen, a drug used to treat breast cancer, can cause hair loss in a third of patients. Hair loss usually becomes noticeable six months to two years after starting therapy.
Dr. Hassan notes that patients should not stop taking medications without consulting a doctor. Medications like ozempic have also been linked to hair loss, but more research is needed to confirm the link.
