Last year, Macedonia spent a staggering 4,02 million dollars on the import of onions, garlic and leeks, which represents an increase of 90 percent compared to 2022, Trend Economy data show. At the moment, the prices of onions on the green markets are at a "low start" - the yellow one costs 30 and 40 denars, and the red one, which is almost non-existent this year, is sold for 100 denars per kilogram.

Last year, Macedonia spent a staggering 4,02 million dollars on the import of onions, garlic and leeks, which represents an increase of 90 percent compared to 2022, according to the data of the international website Trend Economy. The increased foreign exchange outflows for onions were due to the reduced world production, because we almost did not smell the domestic one, and all this contributed to this vegetable reaching 120 denars per kilogram last year! The Macedonian housewives were left in tears by the prices in the green markets and in the markets, because in 2023, the price of onions in Macedonia increased by a staggering 150 percent! Otherwise, the largest part of the import of this vegetable was achieved by Serbia with a share of 68 percent (2,74 million USD), the Netherlands - 9,13 percent (367 thousand USD) and Albania - 7,4 percent (298 thousand USD). In addition to these major suppliers, our markets also have onions, garlic and leeks from France, China, Italy and Turkey.

At the moment, onion prices on the green markets are at a "low start" - the yellow one costs 30 and 40 denars, and the red one, which is almost non-existent this year, is sold for 100 denars per kilogram. The lack of interest of farmers to plant onions can be seen through the high price of a bunch of young onions, which is sold for 60 denars all spring. Onion is not a capricious vegetable, it is relatively cheap and does not bring much profit, so it has almost completely disappeared from the fields. The citizens already know that just as the Berov potato "comes" from Croatia and the Netherlands, the Bucim onion also comes from the northern neighbor.

Last year in June, a kilogram of onions reached up to 100 denars, and in 2022, this was food that could be bought for less than 30 denars (28,62). According to the Agricultural Market Information System of the Ministry of Agriculture, in the first half of June this year, the wholesale price of onions was about 25 denars, and the average retail price was from 30 to 40 denars. In some markets, it is offered for 23 denars each, which is an 80 percent reduction compared to last year's prices. In 2020 and 2021, this vegetable was sold on average at a price of almost MKD 18 per kilogram.

- The bad thing in this case is that the onion crop is very bad for the second year because of the rains that fell at the wrong time. This ruined huge plantations not only in our country, but also throughout Europe, and it is inevitable that it will become more expensive on the market - say the farmers.

Last year, Macedonia spent almost 1 billion euros on food imports, which shows an increase of 88 percent in the last 10 years. Only 20 percent of food and raw materials in the processing industry are produced at home, and we are dependent on imports for 80 percent. Even farmers who have larger areas and a more serious production volume of agricultural products are reducing production because there is no one to work, although the daily wages range from 2.500 to 3.000 denars per day for an 8-hour working day + food, writes the Zemjodelie.mk portal.

After 35 years of cross-breeding, an onion that does not make you cry has been invented

A new branded variety, the tearless sweet onion, has begun to be sold in the US and UK. The new variety developed by the company "BASF" arrived on the shelves of supermarkets in Germany last year, after being available to consumers in Italy in December 2021.

Buyers in Great Britain and France also received the new Sounion onion variety, which is also available in Canada and Spain. After more than 35 years of cultivation, by crossing different varieties, a new branded variety of onion was created, which does not make you cry when you cut it. This new variety also has other features, the company said.

Over the years, many people have tried to find a way to stop crying while cutting onions, by freezing, immersing in water…
