King Charles is celebrating his first birthday as monarch
Britain's King Charles III celebrates his 74th birthday today, the first time as a monarch.
The king is expected to celebrate his birthday with his family, without public engagements. For now, it is not known whether, in accordance with tradition, King Charles III will officially celebrate his birthday in the summer.
Since 1700, monarchs not born during the summer have celebrated another birthday, which is marked by a traditional parade called Trooping the Colour.
The official celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's birthday has always been organized on the second Saturday in June, but it is not yet confirmed whether the new king will celebrate in the same way.
Although King Charles has no official engagements for the day, his first birthday as monarch will be marked today by the Band of the British Cavalry, who will perform the birthday song "Happy Birthday" during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.
A cannon salute will be heard across London in honor of his birthday, and the King's troops will begin firing 41 volleys at noon in London's Green Park, while the Band of the Scots Guards will also perform "Happy Birthday".
The King's Troop is a ceremonial cavalry unit of the British Army, which salutes at royal ceremonies and important events such as state visits. They also take care of the black horses that participate in state and military funerals.
An hour later, at 13pm London time, the Honorable Artillery Corps will fire 62 shots at the Tower of London.
King Charles' birthday plans are unknown, but in previous years he has enjoyed memorable celebrations.
