End of marriage or relationship in the happiest period: Why do so many couples separate immediately after the birth of a child?

Although the birth of a baby is usually part of a love story followed by "They lived happily ever after", in reality this event can take the relationship between the two partners in a completely different direction.

A study conducted in the UK two years ago by a parent site Channel Mum and the company for organizing events related to pregnancy and babies, The Baby Show, showed that as many as a fifth of couples in this country break up in the first year after the birth of a child. Leading causes include lack of sexuality, poor communication, the fact that one parent cares more about the baby, and frequent quarrels.

In some cases, reconciliation occurs, but those with bigger problems definitely end their relationship. A quarter of respondents admitted that their relationship with their partner was not perfect even before the baby was born, but such a lifestyle change is the first major challenge for the couple.

"Forget the famous seven years to six months of sleepless nights that are most likely to separate young parents," says Channel Mum founder Siobhan Freegard.

"Although it is commonly believed that a baby brings the parents even closer, this is not always the case. "Sleepless nights, less time for intimacy and extra responsibility can be the test of the best relationship," Freegard adds.

She also pointed out that parents usually prepare financially for the birth of a child and that it is especially important to be emotionally prepared. Namely, the research showed that as many as 60 percent of the participants in the research believe that they were not prepared for the impact that the baby will have on their lives.

"There is no doubt that it is stressful, as a result of the change in sleep, routine and getting used to the fact that there is now a third person who needs constant care. The most important thing is to talk and understand how you both feel, as well as make time for each other, as well as for the baby," advises Zoe Bonser of "The Baby Show".
