Kovacevski - Brnabic: Strong regional cooperation is the basis for accelerated economic development

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Northern Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski met today with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabiќ.

Prime Minister Kovacevski and Prime Minister Brnabic at this meeting, which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs Bojan Maricic and Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani, reaffirmed the long-standing and traditionally good bilateral relations that are further strengthened from year to year, through intensive and friendly political dialogue confirmed by regular and frequent meetings and high-level visits.

The Prime Minister Kovacevski stressed that the improvement of relations between the two countries continues in the direction of deepening relations with special emphasis on economic cooperation.

Of particular importance, it was said at the meeting, was the assistance and support from the Republic of Serbia during the Covid-19 crisis when this country helped deal with the pandemic of vaccines and other medical assistance.

At the meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Kovacevski thanked for the lifting of the ban on the export of cereals and cooking oil, which showed understanding and solidarity as part of his commitment to cooperation in the region.

The Prime Ministers of Northern Macedonia and Serbia, Kovacevski and Brnabic, emphasized the communication and partnership at the highest level within the Open Balkans Initiative as an additional impetus for regional cooperation, good neighborliness and implementation of European values ​​in our region.

Kovacevski and Brnabic assessed that the initiative should continue to function as a platform for regional cooperation at all levels, emphasizing that the invitation to the forthcoming Open Balkans Summit in Ohrid to participate in other countries in the region will be felt, which will be more beneficial for all citizens of the Western Balkans.

The meeting also focused on the readiness of both parties to organize the third joint session of the two governments as a positive impetus for further development and intensification of relations and cooperation, especially in economic cooperation.

Serbia is the third largest trade partner of Northern Macedonia and the Prime Ministers Kovacevski and Brnabic stated that the total value of the trade of over 1 billion dollars, which increased during the pandemic is a clear sign that economic cooperation should continue to improve with continuous B2B meetings and business forums, as well as joint networking to enter third markets.

The highway and railway infrastructure projects on Corridors 10 and 8 were assessed as particularly important for connecting the region.

Regarding the European integration of the region, the Prime Ministers Kovacevski and Brnabic said that now is the right time for Northern Macedonia and Serbia to start negotiations with the EU and that this step will be a positive signal for the whole region in terms of its geostrategic importance and stability.

At the meeting, the moment of moving the relations between the MOC-OA and the SOC in order to overcome the mutual issues was assessed as positive.
