Placement in the quarterfinals will be provided by the two first-placed national teams from each group, as well as the two best third-placed teams. Thus, the basketball tournament in the group stage will be completed by four of the 12 national teams participating in the Olympics.

By changing the format, the number of matches on the way to the gold medal is reduced and the winner will play six, instead of eight matches as before.
