How close or far are the opposition protests from new elections?

The political climate in Macedonia is sharpened between the government and the opposition in conditions when there is an energy and economic crisis that are a side effect of the war in Ukraine, the veto of Bulgaria and the pandemic. In such circumstances, the two largest political camps can not find consensus on the main issues that plague the country.

The largest opposition party VMRO-DPMNE informed that the last preparations are being made for the implementation of the large anti-government protest to be held in Skopje. According to the announcements, the protest is planned to start at 20.00:XNUMX this Saturday in the city center, which will be preceded by three separate columns of processions of people who will march through the city streets and later in the evening will protest in front of the Government.

Meanwhile, political analysts are debating how much Macedonia needs these developments at a time when the country is facing some of the biggest economic challenges.

Petar Arsovski / Morning briefing

Petar Arsovski believes that the country does not need a new election process at this time, because the period that follows is crucial for the country to spend it on holding new elections.

- The situation is certainly difficult, we are facing a pandemic crisis, war in Ukraine and it is obvious that the political parties in the country have chosen the challenges facing the country not to be resolved by debate but by protests. Every election is a process of at least 6 months when the economy stops. Not only because of that, but also because of the fact that Macedonia has had many elections in the last few years, the citizens do not deserve a new election process but work, dialogue and solutions to their problems. I think that the opposition will not be in favor of the protests, but it should show constructiveness in the process of economic recovery that is necessary at the moment. "The Bulgarian veto is an additional argument with which we should turn to solving domestic problems and not to protests and destructiveness," Arsovski said.

On the other hand, the political analyst Vladimir Bozinovski argues that the government's inaction on the problems of citizens and the country in crisis, the protests are the only tool to change the government and express dissatisfaction with the policies of the ruling coalition.

prof. Vladimir Bozinovski / Morning briefing

- The protests on Saturday are precisely because the country is in chaos. The current political set missed the moment to form a government of national unity and to prevent the economic and energy crisis. The events in Ukraine are only an accelerator of the situation in the country that is going in the wrong direction. One gets the impression that the only goal of the government is to stay in the seats for one more day. In such a state of complete disorientation and inability to deliver results to the citizens, the protests are the only democratic solution that can remove this government and schedule new elections to replace them. Whether VMRO-DPMNE will improve the situation if given the opportunity at this moment can not be said, because what is happening these four or five years can hardly be solved quickly - said Bozinovski.

As Free Press reported yesterday government partners on Sunday will hold a meeting who is expected to reaffirm the support of the ruling coalition and reaffirm the view that the country does not need parliamentary elections at this time, say sources from the ruling coalition.
